Anime/Game Music Videos. For the sake of simplicity, let’s just call them AMVs. Got it? Okay, let’s roll. Also: I know I’m going to ruffle a lot of feathers with this.

Quick introduction; AMVs are made by fans, taking clips from anime or games, and setting them to music, making them a music video. Dun dun dunn. There are good ones. There are bad ones. And there are the ones that just plain suck.  You can pretty much write out any AMV as being good if it contains Kingdom Hearts, emo music or Linkin Park.

If you’re going to make an anime music video, make sure you’ve got a decent editing program and not just Windows Movie Maker. I’m seeing AMVs around these days that are just compiled of 30-second clips, put together to fit the length of the song. They are horrible.

Fitting a song with a cool scene from the game doesn’t make it good.  Putting an emo or Linkin Park song to the Angeal/Genesis/Sephiroth fight makes little to no sense, especially because the fight itself isn’t an emotional piece. It’s all eye-candy and plot exposition once Genesis finishes reciting Loveless.

So choose a song, that you may not like as much as the one you want, that actually fits. I’m going to use an example of an AMV I’ve wanted to make for a long time; Manowar’s Heart of Steel set to Fullmetal Alchemist. Do you know why? Because it’s a good song that fits the material at hand. Not my favourite but it works. I’d make it myself but I’m a shitty editor.

Now for clips. Choosing popular fight scenes and putting them to a fast-paced song doesn’t help at all. If that’s your aim then try for something that syncs up.  Also try to keep it to music that suits the series. Having thrash with say, Naruto, is retarded.

If you’re going to make a music video, make it good. Take the time to edit it well and choose a song that fits the material you’re using, otherwise nobody except emo kids and morons will think it’s any good. Taking flashy, overused scenes that everybody else in the world uses, and putting them to some overly popular, shitty song, does not make a good anime music video.

Taking a great song, whether it be powerful or emotional, and then getting material, particularly notable and memorable scenes that fit the song, is what makes a great AMV.

Champions Online, and the Cataclysm. by meteorfall

I’ve been playing the Open Beta of Champions Online, this week.  And I must say, I’m pretty impressed. The Character Creator is OMFG INSANE. Seriously, you want a rat-man with a jet-pack ? Go ahead. A lumberjack with a laser sword, you say ? No problem. Only bad thing I’ve noticed with it : You can’t make fat characters. Mmhm, no “belly” feature in the creator, which is kinda disapointing ^^.

Graphic-wise, the game looks awesome. It’s colorful and vibrant. Millenium City (the main area of the game) is badass, I love the way they made it. There’s huge skyscrapers, museums, dojos, sewers, suburbs and even a parody of the Fight Club movie. Canada and the Desert are pretty nifty aswell, it’s great to be able to get out of the city unlike CoH.

The game is really smooth, the way the zones are instanced limits the lag by a lot. I like how the game is region-free, meaning players from all around the world can play together.

The Controls are pretty simple too, they’re a lot like any other MMO. Except for the “action” key, which makes you interact with everything in the game (picking up objects, talking to NPCs, opening doors…). Only really frustrating thing is how key bindings don’t save over to other characters, you can set up your keys on one character and have to re-do everything when creating another one.

But yeah, being able to mix and match powers from all the different frameworks is an awesome feature. I currently play as a clown named Cellmate, that mainly uses the Munitions framework (rifles, gatling guns, rocket launchers…).

Anywho, I’m not really sure if I’ll be switching over to CO from WAR, but I’ll be sure to check it out later on if I don’t, as the Open Beta has been very interesting.

Now for a complete different subject. As most of us have I’m sure, I carefully followed Blizzcon and the huge Cataclysm Expansion these past days. And oh god, I love Worgen. Yeah that’s right, when Cataclysm comes out, I’m rolling Ally. Who’d of thought.

The “Path of the Titans” mastery feature sounds cool, even though I’m still not sure what it’s all about. Guild Leveling (which was obviously taken off WAR, which is fine), is badass. Uuh, Azeroth being completely changed is cool, but not being able to go back to the old zones is pretty sad. Let’s see, level cap being raised to 85 and not 90 is interesting, meaning there’ll be even more expansions since the presumed “final” level of WoW will be 100. Archaeology as the new secondary profession is intriguing, digging up relics and finding artifacts sounds fun.

Deadmines and SFK being revamped for 80, WHOO ! I wonder if DM80 will be alliance exclusive-ish like the lower level one is. What else, the new raids and dungeons of Cataclysm will prolly be badass, with the return of Ragnaros. I’m also waiting to see Deathwing, cos’ he’s one badass dragon. Oh right, new race/class combinations : Blood Elf Warriors, yay ! Tauren Pallies, yay ? Dwarf Shamans, uuh, nay.

All in all, I’m looking forward to Cataclysm, it adds plenty of new things that I think will greatly improve WoW. I’ll be watching it closely from now until it’s release, and I hope to hear more details about it soon.

Blizzard (Un)Entertainment by TheWickedOne

I’d like to sit down for a minute and talk about something that’s pissing me off at the moment: Blizzard Entertainment.

Oh yes, the people who brough us such treasures as StarCraft, Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3. Great games, and for me, StarCraft is still a game I play; a fond memory of childhood and bringer of nostalgia. Who can forget the first time they got Zergling-rushed, or that time they forgot to build detectors and got slaughtered by Dark Templar?

These people, who along with Squaresoft, gave me oh-so-many-years of video game time, are destroying the games I play now. Not Square. They can’t release a patch for Final Fantasy 7 to destroy my interest in it. Oh no they’ll just release horrible horrible games that we wait too long to play.

Blizzard have done some fun stuff. The World of Warcraft is going strong and has proven to be one of, if not the most successful MMORPGs, but it’s slowly becoming pretty infuriating, and only the promise of future encounters, and my love for the guildmates I’ve had for three years, is keeping me mildly interested in the game.

We’ll start with the obvious: Death Knights. I played my first Death Knight little less than two months ago, and I had fun. Their mechanic rekindled fond memories of Warhammer Online. They also have interesting talent trees, all of which are viable for tanking. People complain about the Death Knight, citing how overpowered they are as a class. Which is true.

So Blizzard scurries about and nerfs them to hell, along with Paladins and Warlocks. The Warlock did not deserve what has happened to them; no wonder so many Warlocks are rerolling. But there is one particular class that escapes unscathed: Hunters.

The biggest nerf the huntard ever received was in the Beta of the game and the lost the ridiculously powerful Black Arrow spell. Which has been re-implemented with different, weaker effects, but is still a largely powerful ability.

Their penchant for agility gives them dodge and parry rates when engaged in melee, and are very capable of dealing out a lot of pain in ranged. Oh, and they equip mail so they have a decently high amount of armour. Oh! And they get a pet which has the potential to be pretty damn strong.

What in the name of Khaine were they thinking? The Generic Ranger Class is the archetype they aim for, and more-or-less miss their mark.  Generic Ranger Class usually wears light armour (leather in WoW’s case), dualwields and has a pet familiar.

To wit: Hunters can use almost every goddamn weapon in the game, and the many hunters I have met are not afraid of proving it by rolling on said weapons. This is horrible. Hunters should have Daggers, Swords and Polearms. Maces are for clubbing, and I really can’t see Hunters all rushing to join the Seal Cub Clubbing Club.

So Blizzard, rather than screwing around with the playability of classes that were otherwise very sound (see Warlock and Paladins), why don’t you nerf the class that actually needs it? Beat the bastards down to leather, change their weapon skills to actually make them like the Ranger class you guys said you absolutely have to have in the game.

I mean, when I first heard about WoW I knew nothing of the classes. I was hoping you could play as a Demon Hunter or Necromancer. And then, shock, as I see these generically named classes with no option to play as the High Elves! I hadn’t played Frozen Throne at the time, don’t look at me like that. Suffice to say I was annoyed.

And then tragedy strikes with every update about StarCraft 2. Removing the LAN capacity wasn’t at all nice. All I’d play at LAN centres was WarCraft 3 and Starcraft, cos I’m too classy to play Counter-Strike. And they announce that travesty. And the campaigns-released-seperately… that could go two ways.

I mean, the campaigns had better be masterpieces of gloriousness that we experienced in StarCraft and Brood War. But this wait, this twelve-year wait has raised our hopes and expectations; nobody is going to be truly happy with Starcraft 2. It’ll start out well and good…and then there’ll just be this major kick-in-the-teeth that kills the game for so many of us.

Onto Diablo 3! As I’ve never really played Diablo, I can’t really rant about it, but I’d like to call to attention the stupidity here. People have complained about the Red Orbs system, saying it’s ripping off God of War. If you say that, you can go die in a fire.

Devil May Cry was released before that overrated piece of crap God of War, and guess what? It used Red Orbs as currency too! And I’m pretty sure other games did it before Devil May Cry did! I’m going to spare you my rant on God of War, though, but I can tell you it is highly overrated.

In short, Blizzard, stop fucking with the games we loved. No Sequel is better than Shitty Sequel. Shitty Expansions are the reason private servers are so popular. Devil May Cry is awesome. I also cannot wait long enough for Command and Conquer 4.

P.S. Square-Enix, you haven’t escaped my wrath either. If Final Fantasy 13 fails to deliver as Final Fantasy 12 did, consider yourself ranted about. But I loved Dissidia…and Crisis Core. You might earn a reprieve if I don’t hate the English Dub of Dissidia.

P.P.S. I still haven’t forgiven you for Kingdom Hearts though. Bastards.

Hitting 40 again ! by meteorfall

Yes people, Lancast the Magus has dinged Rank 40. Your friend Meteorfall can finally run B/B, LV and hopefully VL again, whoo ! After my switch to the US servers, I lost my R40 BG and was quite frustrated with me having to level up another character. But after a long series of quests, scenarios and power-leveling sessions (^^), Lancast was R40/RR36.

Anyways, this was just a quick notice, I’ll be making a larger post shortly. Have fun in the Age of Reckoning !

A look at Patch 1.3.1 by meteorfall

So, the new Patch Notes for Warhammer Online have been released, and I’m both excited and disapointed. First off, let’s talk about the Highlights of the Patch :

-City Siege Revamp : What I like the most in here is the 24 player instance instead of a 48 man open Warlord Encounter. Hopefully this’ll greatly reduce lag in the Warlord Public Quests. The “three-phase” system is pretty interesting and we’ll have to see how it turns out. Also, players don’t need to kill the enemy PQ Boss to be able to advance anymore, now capturing BOs and killing other players will be a second way of moving to the next stage.

-Second Ramp to the Keep Lord : While this will probably facilitate pushes up to the Lord Room, it simply means that there’ll be a second nuke spot on top of the stairs. Although, we haven’t tested it yet so I can’t really say how it will work out.

-Summoning Stones : This is a very intriguing feature. It seems to be an outlet for the “OMG this keep is getting zerged, lemme call my friends so we can defend it !” moments. One thing I’ve been thinking of though is, let’s say a Witch Hunter goes into a non-deadbolted keep, can he call a healer inside the keep with a Summoning Stone ? Cos’ that’d be insane.

For more “minor” changes, I really like how players who don’t own Land of the Dead can still enter instances with a 6-man group. Being able to butcher/scavenge all the mobs in LV is pretty fun, too. The “Smart Drop” for RvR tokens seems to be a nice new feature, possibly increasing the chance for Medallions to drop.

However, the best change in the Patch in my opinion is the following one : “Chat: Corrected an issue where typing ‘^^’ would only result in ‘^’ being shown in chat.” I’ve been waiting for this one Mythic, thank you ! ^^

I know you’ve been waiting for me to talk about the Career Bugfixes, and this is really what disapointed me. It’s bugfixes, there are NO actual Career Changes, even though some of the Marauder/Magus’ abilities are apparently going to do slightly more damage, I would of really liked to see some nerfs/buffs to different careers. For a new Patch, Career Changes would of been appropriate, but I guess we’ll have to wait a little bit longer for an actual C&C Patch.

Meteorfall’s WAAAGHin again by meteorfall

Good day my fellow readers. As you may know, I played WAR before along with one of the other writers here, Mike. Well, I left WAR for about a month and a half after Patch 1.3 (Land of the Dead) came out, and I just recently got back into the game. Right now, I play as Lancast, a Magus on the Ironrock server, and I must say I’m having a lot of fun, way more than I expected.

I primarily un-subbed because the game stopped being interesting to me, it was becoming very repetitive and slow, and failed to keep my attention for long enough. After I started playing again (which I believe is right when patch 1.3.0b came out), I found the game more fun for some reason, the Land of the Dead was a great new addition in my opinion. While I haven’t participated in any of the Tomb content (both Vulture Lord and “lower-class” Tombs, being only R33 at the time I write this post), I’ve really been enjoying all the different PQs with the new interesting mechanics.

Anyways, this was just a little announcement about my return to WAR, so I’ll probably be the one posting about it the most (even though I’m sure my co-writers have a fuckton of WAR-related rants). Until then, keep reading, we’ll keep writing.
